PEOPLE in east Durham are invited to look after their environment by taking part in a community conservation event.

Durham County Council’s countryside service is organising a session from 10am to noon on Sunday October 28, aimed at clearing a section of the Hart-Haswell railway path, near Castle Eden.

Activities will involve improving the area for wildlife by encouraging a new section of wildflower meadow to develop.

Brambles will be cut back and mown grass raked up to prevent it from rotting on the ground. This allows light to enter and helps the wild flowers to grow.

County council countryside development Maria Murphy said: “This event is open to anyone who wants to give us a hand, you don’t need any experience at all. “It’s perfect if you fancy a couple of hours in the fresh air, doing something just a little bit different.

“There is already a small patch of wildflowers which is great for butterflies and bees, but our plan is to extend the meadow and help to encourage more.”

All tools will be provided, and children under 16 must be supervised. People attending are advised to wear old clothes and sturdy footwear.
