A FORMER football club chairman is to become chancellor of a university.

Sir Bob Murray who guided Sunderland from 1986 to 2006, will be installed by Leeds Metropolitan University later this year.

The businessman and philanthropist, who led the football club’s move from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light, studied accountancy at the university’s predecessor, Leeds Polytechnic, and set up the pioneering Foundation of Light charity.

Sir Bob was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Leeds Metropolitan in business administration.

He said: “I feel very privileged to have been invited to become the chancellor and was thrilled to accept.

“It is a highly-respected university that plays such an important role in developing the potential and talent of thousands of students from many different parts of the world.”
