A HAIRDRESSING apprentice is heading for India to teach poor children her skills.
Rachelle Davis, an apprentice at Janet Maitland Hair Excellence, in Durham, is to spend three weeks in at the SOS Children’s Village, in Chennai, south-east India, where she will train orphans in colouring and cutting techniques.
The 19-year-old is due to leave before the end of this month.
She said: “Being given this exceptional opportunity is just amazing.
“Not only having an apprenticeship in an award-winning hairdressers but playing a part in helping orphans in India is something I’m very proud of.”
Miss Davis will be joined by colleagues from her workplace.
Salon owner Janet Maitland said: “Our salons have a great reputation for training young people but I never thought we’d be asked to go to India to pass on our skills.
“We’re really looking forward to helping the budding hairdressers find work.”
