A BRASS band will bring its centenary celebrations to a climax with a spectacular concert in Durham Cathedral later this month.

The Reg Vardy Band will play an evening of brass band favourites and other music - including a performance of the award-winning composition Grey Tower.

The piece, a musical interpretation of the history of Durham Cathedral, was written by Tom Glendinning, a member of the band and the Cathedral choir, who said it was a pleasure to have it performed in the Cathedral.

The Reg Vardy Band was formed in 1910 as Craghead Colliery Band, in Craghead, near Stanley, County Durham.

It achieved championship status in 1959 and has held it ever since, winning the North of England area championships 33 times and representing the North of England at the national finals 44 times in the last 49 years.

The concert, titled Cathedral Brass, will be held in Durham Cathedral on Saturday, October 29, at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £15 and £10 - or £13 and £8 for concessions, can be booked by calling the Gala Theatre box office on 0191-3324041.

The event is being held in aid of the Cathedral’s Music Endowment Fund, held at the County Durham Community Foundation.
