WORK to improve a cobbled lane is to take two weeks longer than expected.

Bow Lane, an historic thoroughfare in Durham City, is undergoing a £195,000 facelift which will see river cobbles and stone paving re-laid where possible, along with the addition of kerbs and paving stones. It will also see a loading bay created for residents.

Work started on the lane, which leads from the eastern end of Durham Cathedral to Kingsate Bridge, on September 5 and was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of October.

However, the completion date has now been revised to Sunday, November 13.

While work continues, the road is closed to vehicles and pedestrians and there is no through access over the bridge or from the Riverside.

However, visitors to the city centre colleges can follow the diversion signs via New Elvet, Elvet Bridge and Saddler Street.

Durham County Council’s senior technician in highway design, Sara Forbes, said: "We appreciate the co-operation we’re receiving from colleges, residents and members of the public and thank everyone for their patience.

"While works are progressing we also want to remind people to continue to use alternative routes."
