POLICE are appealing for donations of food as they prepare to repeat last year’s operation to help housebound residents through the winter.
During December’s big freeze, officers in Stanley teamed up with staff from the town’s Asda store and Durham County Council to deliver food parcels to elderly and disabled residents.
Police and council workers also cleared snow and ice from footpaths and roofs.
As winter approaches once more, officers are gearing up to repeat the rescue effort, providing basic provisions at a time when many residents find it very difficult to get to the shops.
Organisers hope to have supplies in stock ready for when the snow hits again, and they are asking people for donations which can be stored until they are needed.
PCSO Dan Beardmore, who came up with the idea last year, said: "Any dried or tinned goods which people are willing to donate would be gratefully received.
"A little forward planning will help us be prepared in the event of last year’s harsh weather being repeated.
Anyone wishing to donate items can contact PCSO Beardmore or Sgt Kelly Martin on 0345 6060365 or Steve McCallan from the Safer Neighbourhood Unit on 0191 375 2650.
