CAMPAIGNERS for County Durham’s first free school say they have received ‘overwhelming’ support for the plan.

Parents in Bowburn, Shincliffe and surrounding areas want to set up their own secondary school as they have struggled to get their children into Durham Johnston.

The parents’ group took their case to the public when they held a stall in Durham Market Place on Saturday, June 11.

Leader John Denning said: "The response we had was very positive.

"We did not really need to promote the idea because most people had already decided it is a good thing.

"Of course some people did raise objections and made some fair points but the number of people willing to sign up was more than ten times those who disagreed.

"It was also very encouraging to see how many teachers, as well as parents, support what we are trying to achieve."

It is hoped Durham Free School could open in September 2013.
