CAMPAIGNERS hoping to open County Durham’s first free school will take their plans to the public this weekend.
Parents in Bowburn and surrounding villages want their own secondary school as they have struggled to get their children into Durham Johnston.
In 2008, the leading Durham City comprehensive’s entry criteria was changed to favour youngsters living closer.
A parents’ group wants to open Durham Free School in September 2013.
Group leader John Denning said: "We received a lot of interest and support at our public meeting in March. Based on that we are taking our proposal to the next stage."
People wanting more information can visit a stall in Durham Market Place on Saturday, June 11.
Mr Denning said: "We welcome anyone caring for children who will be ready for secondary school in 2013 to come and ask us any questions.
"People will also be able to register an interest in a place at the school."
Four potential sites have been mentioned for the school: Whinney Hill, Houghall, Old Shire Hall and Elvet Baths. Former industrial sites in Bowburn could also be considered.
A free school is free from council control - directly responsible to, and funded by, the Government.
Backers say the school would have a traditional Christian ethos and not select pupils on ability.
