A WISHING well that allows people to tell community leaders what changes they would like has been unveiled in north Durham.

It has been built from recycled furniture by Durham County Councillor Stephen Robinson, who represents Benfieldside.

It will be taken to public buildings, such as churches, schools, community centre and village halls so people can make their suggestions.

Councillor Robinson said: "I would like everybody to get involved with this.

"People should not be afraid to come forward with things. It could be a great way to get things changed.

"I want the community to be a better place to live."

Councillor Robinson said the wishing well could also be used to make suggestions about crime and pass information to police anonymously.

Inspector Dave Turner, of Consett police, said: "It is about getting people to report things to us as sometimes people are frightened and feel they have got no-one to turn to.

"This could involve drugs, abuse domestic violence; anything really that damages the fabric of our community. I think it is a cracking idea."

The wishing well will initially be circulated in the Benfieldside area and then widened to the Derwent Valley Partnership area, which includes Consett and the surrounding district.

To have it brought to a public building call Coun Robinson on 0191-372-5817.
