DOZENS of bags of rubbish have been collected after volunteers did their bit to clean up a former railway line.

A team of 14 countryside volunteers picked up litter on a stretch of the Brandon to Bishop Auckland railway line, near Meadowfield Sports Centre, in Durham City.

Staff from Durham County Council were on hand to remove larger items such as abandoned kitchen cabinets, televisions and carpets.

In all, 47 bin liners were collected by the volunteers, enough to fill two tractor trailers, and taken away for safe disposal.

Coun Brian Stephens said: "I am very grateful to the countryside volunteers who are willing to give their time to help council staff improve our local environment."

The clean-up was sparked after members of the public expressed concerns about the state of the railway line.
