A TEENAGER is to take part in a charity walk just months after losing her mother to cancer.
Mum-of-three Linda Lazaro died in February aged 55 after a seven-year battle with kidney cancer.
Now her daughter, 18-year-old Yasmin Lazaro is to take part in the Midnight Walk in Durham City, to raise money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice which cared for her mum in her final weeks.
Miss Lazaro, from Burnhope, was just 11 years old when her mother’s illness was diagnosed.
She said: "When my mum found out she had cancer, she had an operation and hoped for the best, but a fortnight later, they found that it had spread. That’s when she sat me down and told me she had cancer.
"I was so young and didn’t fully understand what it meant, but naturally I was devastated. I was so angry that this could happen to her.
"She would have done anything for anyone; it seemed unfair for it to happen to someone so amazing."
Since Mrs Lazaro’s death, husband Trevor and Yasmin, a keen singer, have raised £1,300 for St Cuthbert’s Hospice through fundraising concerts and donations.
On Saturday, June 18th, she will take part in the annual women-only Midnight Walk, which begins at St Leonard’s Playing Fields, near County Hall, in Durham.
Miss Lazaro said: "I couldn’t give back what the hospice did for my mam, we can raise money but it’s simply not enough; they treated my mam like an absolute goddess and made our family feel so at home."
