COUNCILLORS have granted a pool hall a drinks and entertainment licence after the new manager overcame objections from residents.
People who live near the Q Club, on Station Road, in Chester-le-Street, initially feared the late licence would lead to unruly behaviour in the early hours of the morning.
But following a meeting at Chester-le-Street Civic Centre of the statutory licensing sub committee applicant Ben Cook has got his full licence.
The club can now open from everyday from 10am-1am every night, show films, host sporting events and host live music from Thursday-Sunday.
The aim is to make a venue for top level pool contests, but residents initially opposed the licence because of the impact it could have on their quality of life.
Mr Derek Briggs, of Wesley Terrace, said: "The premises are situated close to residential properties, and to allow live music including bands and karaoke in a hall hired by the public which will include excessive noise late at night.
"People living in this vicinity will get little peace in their homes as this is for seven days a week."
Mr Cook, who lives in Sacriston, took over the club in February this year and it has been closed for refurbishment until earlier this month.
It has been operating on a temporary event licence since May 8.
Mr Cook, who used to work for Riley’s as the general manager of the Sunderland City Centre venue, is the owner and licensee of the Q Club.
He said: "All patrons leaving the club will be encouraged at all times to respect the residents in the local area and we will not allow anyone to remain on the premises who is in a condition that may lead to anti social behaviour, not will we allow them future access to the premises should this unlikely problem occur."
He reassured residents during a break in the meeting agreeing to open an hour later for special events and not host live music Monday to Wednesday.
Mr Briggs agreed to act as a spokesman for residents so any issues that arise in future could be addressed by Mr Cook.
Granting the licence committee chairman Councillor Colin Carr said: "I would like to congratulate Mr Cook and yourselves on what you have achieved today.
"I am sure this will be a great attraction for the whole of Chester-le-Street."
