A RESPECTED headteacher who helped transform the fortunes of his school is to leave his job after eight years.

Jonathan Morris, head of Moorside Community Technology College, in Consett, has been appointed as new headteacher of Marden High School, in North Tyneside.

During his time at the helm, Mr Morris oversaw a dramatic improvement in the school’s exam performance.

In 2003, when he arrived, only 12 per cent of pupils gained five GCSE passes at grade A to C, including English and Maths. Last year, the figure stood at a record 62 per cent.

Mr Morris said: "Moorside now has an established reputation as a school with a very caring ethos and a forward thinking approach to new technology.

"However, I must stress that these gains have been achieved by the hard work and great team spirit of students , staff, governors, parents and the community. I would like to thank all of them for giving me the happiest years of my career."

Chair of governors Philip Archer added: "Jonathan’s achievements have earned him the respect, admiration and affection of governors. He will be greatly missed and we wish him well."

Moorside is due to merge with nearby Consett Community Sports College to form a new Consett Academy in January, before moving into a new purpose-built site in 2014.

Mr Morris said: "To make the next step change, our students need a 21st Century learning environment which the academy will provide when the new building is complete in 2014.

"Both schools have excellent staff who I am sure will combine together to produce even better results for the young people in their care.

"If required, I would be glad to offer support and advice in ensuring that the new secondary school for Consett is a success."
