A BRASS festival is returning for a fifth year.

Brass: Durham International Festival will run from July 1 to 17, with street theatre, multi-media installations, international collaborations and an extensive community programme.

There will be music from traditional brass bands, new-style acts and groups from across the globe.

The festival will also include new commissions and collaborations, with a Durham Cathedral concert by Northumbrian folk act The Unthanks and national champions Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band.

Piper Kathryn Tickell has been commissioned to work with Trimdon Concert Band, from County Durham, on a piece for Durham Miners’ Gala, the festival’s traditional centerpiece.

Magicaboola, Oompah Brass and Beat n’ Blow will be the festival’s resident bands.

There will be street performances in Streets of Brass and work around the Apollo Pavilion, in Peterlee.

Other visiting acts include: The Soul Rebels Brass, Winter North Atlantic, Stavanger Brass Band and The Big Chris Barber Band.

A Brass spokesman said: "Brass is committed to building a festival for all to enjoy and offers an engaging programme of workshops and concerts throughout the county, giving players the opportunity to meet, create and play with some of the world’s most creative brass musicians.

"International bands involved in this year’s schools education programme will be delivering over 90 performances while many of the bands who are in the county for the festival will tour community centres and village halls ensuring everyone can experience the international brass sound.

"With cutting edge electronica, site-specific commissions, genre-breaching collaborations and a rich programme of Europe’s best street theatre, Brass explodes the brass band tradition and turns it on its head."
