PLANS to demolish eight homes which are suffering from structural problems have been approved by councillors.

East Durham Homes tenants in St Bede Crescent and St Chad Square, in the Thornlaw South area of Thornley, reacted with anger when Durham County Council announced the demolition scheme last week.

However, yesterday, the council’s cabinet backed the plans.

Councillor Clive Robson, cabinet member for housing, said: "The problems with the homes in St Bede’s and St Chad’s have been known for some time.

"Over the years, the estate has had some significant remodelling. It’s now time to deal with the remaining properties in council ownership."

Nine homes will be fully refurbished and four more given new doors and windows.

Coun Alan Napier, the council’s deputy leader, said: "Not doing anything is not an option. This will help to regenerate the area."

Coun Neil Foster said: "Inevitably there are some concerns about what change will bring. These projects do always bring concerns from residents. But I’m more than happy to support this."

Coun Lucy Hovvels said: "I’m sure the residents of Thornley will welcome these recommendations. I’m pleased we’ve made progress in this area."

Ian Thompson, the council’s corporate director of regeneration and economic development, said the scheme would only go ahead following full consultation with residents.

The work will be carried out with £315,000 from East Durham Homes and £161,552 from the council.
