A FARMERS’ market is returning for the new year.

The City of Durham Farmers’ Market, now in its 12th year, will hold its first event of 2011 in Durham City Market Place on Thursday, January 20.

There will be more than 20 stalls featuring local and guest producers and craftspeople.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: "Durham Farmers’ Market features the finest local independent farm produce from across the county.

"Not only can you find what’s in season and get ideas for new recipes but by shopping at the market once a month, you can pick up good quality produce within hours of it being picked, reducing food miles and supporting the local economy.

"We look forward to welcoming as many people as possible along to the first in a series of great events for 2011."

The market will be held from 9am to 3.30pm. Further farmers’ markets will be held on Thursday, February 17, and Thursday, March 17.
