POLICE are warning residents to be extra vigilant following a spate of sneak-in burglaries.
Over the past two weeks, police have received reports of a number of such crimes being committed in Dipton, near Stanley.
Thieves have entered several homes after dark, stealing items including laptop computers, jewellery and cameras.
Detective Constable Scott Jameson, of Durham Police’s Derwentside crime team, asked people to take extra care when securing their properties.
He said: "Over the past two weeks we’ve had a number of burglaries reported to us where people have got in via unlocked doors.
"I would encourage everyone to take extra care and ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secure, even when you’re at home."
Among the items stolen were: a small, wooden box with golden elephants engraved on its lid, a pair of silver fish symbol earrings and a gold chain bearing Christian fish and cross symbols.
Anyone who has information on the burglaries or who is offered any of the items for sale is asked to call Durham Police on 0345-60-60-365 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
