A NORTH-East lollipop lady has been shortlisted for a national safety award.
Doreen Rodwell was nominated for the Goodyear prize by teachers, children and parents at Finchale Primary School, in Newton Hall, Durham City.
Michael McCarthy, the school’s acting deputy head, said Mrs Rodwell had been invaluable in helping people to cross the road during heavy snow.
"We nominated Doreen because she is a dedicated and committed member of our team.
"A few weeks ago we had a power failure but the school remained open. Doreen, no matter what time the school opened, made sure that she was available to help children and adults alike."
Mrs Rodwell said: "I’m thrilled to have made the shortlist. I’ve been the school’s lollipop lady for about 11 years, so it’s lovely for the community to recognise my work in this way."
For being shortlisted, Mrs Rodwell has won high-visibility jackets and a brightly-coloured walking rope for children at her school.
If she takes the title, she would win a set of Goodyear OptiGrip tyres for her car.
Michelle Fisher, from Goodyear, said: "To hear about Doreen’s work is simply an inspiration to us all."
