POLICE have appealed for witnesses following an armed robbery at an off-licence.
A police spokesman said a man walked into Jimmy’s off-licence in Hendon Valley Road, Hendon, Sunderland, and demanded the staff fill a bag at 8.55pm on Monday.
The suspect was wearing a mask and armed with an axe-type weapon which he has brandished at a member of staff. The member of staff has refused to fill the bag and the man has made off from the store, in the direction of Villette Road.
Nothing was stolen from the store.
The member of staff was left shaken by the incident but otherwise uninjured.
Neighbourhood Inspector John Connolly, who covers the area, said: "Understandably when incidents like this happen it raises the fear of crime for members of the community and I'd like to reassure residents that we are doing everything we can to find who is responsible.
"I'd urge anyone who may have any information to contact police."
He was wearing camouflage clothing.
Anyone with any information should contact Northumbria Police on 03456-043-043 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
