A UNIQUE collection of short stories and poems celebrating a former mining village was launched at the weekend.

Shrugging off the Wind, an anthology by Easington Writers, is the first time that funds from the National Lottery have been used for a work of fiction.

All the stories in the collection have some connection with Easington and the surrounding area.

Members of the writing group – which was established only three years ago - spoke to residents, young and old and then used their memories and experiences as inspiration for a varied selection of stories.

Novelist Wendy Robertson who helped the nine writers polish their work through a series of workshops, said: "The sheer character, energy and originality of the writing is a delight."

The book is illustrated with paintings and sketches by local artist Fiona Naughton and with photographs by Mavis Farrell.

Shrugging off the Wind was launched at Easington Social Welfare Centre on Saturday.

The books costs £3 and is available locally and can be ordered from all good book stores.
