PLANS to create a multi-million pound superstore in the centre of a former north Durham mining town go on show next week.

Tesco is set to take on Asda’s dominance in Stanley with a new development in the Clifford Road area of the town.

If the plans are approved the supermarket would create 400 and be one of the biggest investments in the town’s history.

Tesco’s corporate affairs manager Doug Wilson said: "We are delighted to share our plans with the people of Stanley and give them the opportunity to comment on the new store proposal.

"The store will offer shoppers a greater choice and crucially, during these difficult times, Tesco’s investment will be a great boost to the economy in Stanley."

Jobs created will include full and part-time local jobs with flexible working patterns and among the best rates of pay and benefits package in the retail sector. Training courses range from basic retail skills through to graduate and management schemes.

The store would have a shop floor of 55,000 square feet on the first floor of the development with a car park below on the ground floor.

It has 500 spaces and travelators, or moving pavements, to provide shoppers with easy access between the shop and car park.

The store will be clad in larch and maximise the use of glazing to provide as much natural lighting as possible.

They also have a number of other energy efficient measures, including a combined heat and power unit to generate their own energy and roof ventilators to allow natural air flow.

Details of the plan will go on show at the Lamplight Arts Centre in Stanley from 11.30am-5.30pm on Tuesday and 10am-8pm on Wednesday and Thursday.
