A FARMER has won permission to open a new visitor attraction for children - a dream come true for him and his 13-year-old daughter.

The new Mini Moos Farm near Edmondsley will feature a tractor and trailer drive, an area for petting animals an extensive collection of bunnies.

The plans at Holmside Park Arena, Holmside Lane, Edmondsley, are part of a continuing drive toward diversification by Ian Emmerson and it is expected 10 new jobs will be created as a result.

It is hoped the development - approved by Durham County Council’s planning committee meeting in Chester-le-Street -_ will be open in time for the school summer holidays in July.

Mr Emmerson said: "This is a dream come true for my daughter Katherine and myself.

"We have been showing Dexter cows - which are half the size of normal cows - around the country for several years now.

"Everywhere we have been people really like them, specially the calves. People have been amazed at how small and cute they are.

"This is something we have both wanted to do. We thought it would be a really good idea for people to come and "Meet the Mini Moos"."

Mr Emmerson said there would be a tractor and trailer ride, so visitors will be able to tour the 50-acre site, with the animals linked to a story.

Access for viewing the animals would be provided, as well as areas for petting small domestic animals like rabbits.

There will also be a covered area, so the attraction can operate in all weathers.

As well as Dexter cattle, there will be other small breeds, such as miniature donkeys which have been imported from the US.

Part of the existing equestrian arena will be converted to provide a soft play area, snack and sales area and an education room for school visits.

There will also be a picnic area, small play area and access to woodland walks.

Mr Emmerson said: "We are already a well diversified farm and have parking provision.

"The equestrian centre was built some 18 years ago and it has never really been lucrative.

"But it remains a meeting place for young people and we want to maintain what we have got.

"This will give us much-needed revenue and allow the arena to continue."
