A VILLAGE’S gas supply is getting a £150,000 upgrade.
Work started on the gas mains in High Shincliffe, near Durham, on Monday, January 25. It is expected to last 15 weeks.
United Utilities staff are replacing 1.5km of old metal gas mains with modern, more reliable plastic pipes.
The firm is working on behalf of the North-East’s gas pipeline owner, Northern Gas Networks (NGN).
An NGN customer liaison officer will be on site to discuss the project with residents.
The two companies have apologised for any inconvenience caused by the work, which they describe as essential.
Chris Gorman, director of NGN, said: "We will do everything we can to minimise any disruption.
"This year, Northern Gas Networks will invest £82m renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world.
"The good news is that we will be using modern technology to reduce the number of excavations we need to complete the work and our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of at least 80 years."
