THE DURHAM Choral Society will present a concert featuring the works of composer Vaughan Williams at the weekend.

The programme presented at Durham Cathedral at 7.30;pm on Saturday (Jan23) includes Williams’ Sea Symphony, Serenade to Music, and his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

This performance of the Sea Symphony is believed to be the first in the UK to celebrate the centenary of it's composition and is a great introduction to the Tall Ships race starting from Hartlepool in July.

Serenade to Music was composed by Vaughan Williams for, and dedicated to Sir Henry Wood on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee as a conductor.

As an indication of Vaughan Williams popularity as a composer, his Fantasia on the Tallis Theme reached 3rd place in Classic FM's 100 best tunes this year!

Over 100 members of the society will be singing, with the orchestra led by Susan Eaton and conducted by Richard Brice. The soloists are Sally Harrison and Alexander Robin Baker.

Ticket prices are£16, £10 and £6, with concessions £2 less and under 16's half price.

These are available Durham Tourist Information Office on 0191-383 7641, on line from www.WeGotTickets.com, or from choir members.

A spokesman for the society said: "Despite the weather for the Christmas Concert, about 120 brave souls struggled into Elvet Methodist Church to provide an enthusiastic audience.

"This has enabled us to donate significant sums of money to two local charities."
