RESIDENTS are being offered free training sessions to help them with basic computer skills.

The flexible courses, which are open to residents of East Durham on certain types of benefit, covers word processing, e-mail and use of the internet Students can attend sessions at their local library or choose an alternative venue in the local area.

Debra Wilson, lifelong learning course tutor for organisers Durham County Council, said: "Our tutors are very flexible as to where they carry out the training and are happy to work around the needs of learners.

"Those who have completed the course so far have really enjoyed it and have been delighted to have gained a qualification."

The course, which has been funded by the Working Neighbourhoods programme, is available until the end of March 2010.

People wishing to enrol on the course, which lasts up to 20 hours, must receive Incapacity Benefit or the sickness element of Income Support.

Anyone receiving Employment Support Allowance who has not yet had an interview with a Pathways to Work advisor is also eligible.
