A COMMUNITY group rocked by the resignation of its secretary over the alleged student takeover of Durham has vowed to continue, focusing on its local environment.

Mike Costello quit as secretary of Crossgate Community Partnership (CCP), of which he was a founder member, last September, claiming his efforts to prevent "over-studentification" had been for nothing.

However, following an annual general meeting, CCP has regrouped with a new management committee and goals.

Treasurer Colin Green said environmental issues would be a priority, with possible funding to improve Wharton Park high on the agenda.

Mr Green said: "We got a lot of support. Mike has resigned and people were wondering whether or not it would continue but a lot of people turned out.

"We got a lot of support from councillors - from our area and other parts of the city - and other residents’ groups also expressed their support.

"It was a very positive meeting. We will carry on trying to improve things in the Crossgate area."

CCP is also: · Backing architect Tony Hyland’s idea to convert a former United Reformed Church in Claypath into a community arts centre; · Supporting calls for a Durham Town Council; · Making contact with new Durham County Council planning officers regarding conservation and heritage.

Following a debate about the future of CCP, it was agreed there was sufficient support for the group to continue in its present form and it should continue to liaise with other groups in Durham with similar objectives, such as the City of Durham Trust conservation group.

On "studentification", Mr Green said CCP was supporting Durham MP Roberta Blackman-Woods’ efforts to create balanced and sustainable communities.

"We welcome students into the area but are concerned that there should be planning controls to prevent or reverse the extensive transformation of streets so that they are almost entirely occupied by students."

Artist and campaigner Janie Bickersteth was appointed CCP secretary. The chair’s post will be rotated between management committee members.

Mr Green said: "There’s a positive future for the group and everyone’s welcome."

CCP’s next meeting will be held in Waddington Street Church on Monday, January 25, from 7.30pm.
