A COMMUNITY garden is giving villagers the chance to plant and grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Jack’s Grubbery was officially opened on Saturday (7 November) at Wheatley Hill Children’s Centre, Jack Lawson Terrace, Wheatley Hill.
Residents will be encouraged to help run and maintain the garden, which has been funded by County Durham Environmental Trust and will be managed by the children’s centre.
Lisa Little, Children’s Centre co-ordinator, said: "Jack’s Grubbery is a great chance to promote a healthier lifestyle, encouraging children to learn about planting, growing and eating fresh produce.
"I’m looking forward to seeing the children’s flowers when they spring up next year."
The launch featured a family fun day with activities including pumpkin-carving, vegetable planting and candle-making.
