RUG-MAKING masterclasses take place in aid of visually impaired crafts people in Africa later this month.

Among 20-plus venues hosting Rug Aid activities is Newton Hall Community Centre, in Durham, where master craftswoman Heather Ritchie, from Swaledale, North Yorkshire, will be giving lessons and recounting her experiences starting mat-making classes for the blind, in the Gambia.

All those attending the various ‘Rug Rave’ events will have the chance to briefly try blindfold mat-making to experience the difficulties faced by the Gambian trainees. Rugs made in the Gambia are sold by Mrs Ritchie at classes round the UK, with proceeds going to the Rug Aid African charity.

Apart from the demonstrations and ‘blind’ rug-making, the Rug Rave also features a raffle, tombola and bring and buy stall.

It takes place on Saturday November 21 and runs from 10am - 3pm at the community centre, in Ryelands Way, Newton Hall.

Admission is £5, with further information available on www.rug-aid.org or by ringing the centre, on 0191-386 2866.
