A CHARITY shop is celebrating ten years of service to the community.
Since Beyond Ourselves opened on Front Street, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, in October 1999, it has helped projects in India, Ghana and Albania.
Proceeds from the shop have boosted causes including a school, a medical centre and an orphanage.
Staff, volunteers and regular customers marked the shop’s anniversary with a reception and birthday cake.
Administrator Dave Bulman said: "We opened the shop so that profits would fund various projects we were involved in.
"It’s been extremely successful both in what we’ve been able to deliver and in building relationships with the local community."
The shop employs three full- and part-time workers and is supported by a small team of volunteers. It was initially sponsored by Emmanuel Church, Durham.
Mr Bulman said: "Last year was our best in financial terms. It’s very encouraging to see many regular customers comes through the doors, in some cases every day.
"Our plan is for more of the same. We’re excited that there are continued opportunities to support projects in India and Albania."
Beyond Ourselves is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5pm. Anyone interested in volunteering should visit the shop and talk to manager Joan Howie.
