A FURTHER appeal has been made for witnesses to come forward to help a police investigation into the road death of a 12-year-old boy.

Steven Atkinson was thrown from his bike in a collision with a car, on the A183 Chester Road, Sunderland, on Saturday October 17.

The incident took place as he was making his way across the road, near the junction with Glenleigh Drive and The Broadway, in Grindon, at around 8.45pm.

Steven, of Fordham Road, Ford Estate, Sunderland, was taken to the city’s Royal Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.

The Sandhill View School pupil had won a three-year battle to overcame leukemia as a younger boy, Having viewed cctv footage from cameras in the area, police are keen to speak to people travelling in three passing vehicles who they believe may have seen what happened.

They are the drivers and passengers of a white van and small blue car, possibly a hatchback, who were driving eastbound towards the city centre.

The third person is the male driver of a silver Vauxhall Corsa who was travelling westbound and may have stopped at the scene of the collision.

Police have asked any motorists using the A183 at around the time of the incident to come forward.

Some may not have been aware there had been an incident.

A 20-year-old man, who was driving the vehicle involved in the collision, was arrested at the scene and has been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.
