CHANGES seen in Durham in the 177 years since the inception of the city's university are examined in a new adult education course.
Town and Gown will explore how the development of Durham has been affected by the university, following its foundation in 1832.
Tutor Dr Dorothy Hamilton, who has been teaching adult education courses in and around Durham since 1992, said it is hard to imagine the city without the university.
"The course will outline the history of the university, but will also discuss ways that it has affected many other aspects of Durham’s history, including adult education, plus property ownership and usage around the city."
Dr Hamilton said the course will also provide an introduction to the use of various historical sources for research purposes.
"People really like to discover more about the history of the places where they live.
"And, they enjoy meeting other people who share an interest in local history," she added.
The five-session course, on Fridays, between 1.15 and 3.45pm, takes place at the Royal County Hotel, in Old Elvet, starting on November 6.
It will feature a mix of class-based sessions, plus field trips to look at archives and buildings in the city.
The course fee is £45, with further details available by emailing drdorothyhamilton@btinternet.com, or by ringing 0191-373 9252.
