SHOPPERS are being asked to make Christmas a little bit sweeter for disadvantaged youngsters.

Wearside-based Hope 4 Kidz, which helps young people across the North East affected by illness, hardship and disability, is asking people to donate edible selection boxes of sweets and chocolates in time for Christmas 2009.

The selection boxes will be given out to children attending the charity’s annual Christmas party and the rest will be distributed at hospitals, shelters and other good causes around the region.

Viv Watts, from Hope 4 Kidz, said: "The Hope 4 Kidz Christmas party is a chance for young people who often have the weight of the world on their shoulders to just come out, relax and have fun.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity to show them that things don’t always have to be a burden and these selection boxes will ensure they can go away with a smile on their face."

Selection boxes can be left at the Customer Accounts desk at Joplings in Sunderland, the Early Learning Centre, in The Gates Shopping Centre, in Durham City, or the designated collection box at Morrisons supermarket in Seaburn, before December 6.

Donations will also be accepted at any of the Customer Service Desks in the MetroCentre, Gateshead until November 18.
