PARENTS and carers in a north Durham community will be able to learn how to talk easily with their children about sex and relationships with the help of a group of newly qualified trainers.

The eight new trainers have all completed Level 3 of the Speakeasy Programme, which means they are now able to deliver Level 1 and 2 training to other parents and carers in Derwentside.

And a further four parents and carers are also celebrating after they completed their own Level 2 training.

The group, which includes parents, carers and professionals, completed their training at Stanley Sure Start Children’s Centre, in Clifford Road, Stanley.

Louise Frost, Sure Start Family Support Worker, said: "The training has given me the confidence and knowledge required to provide training for local parents and carers.

"I have also made links with other professionals who I can call upon for further support and advice."

Parents Kelly Garrett and Kate Scott were among those to complete the Level 2 training.

Ms Garrett said: "I have a far better understanding of the issues and this has given me the confidence to explain them to my children." said Kelly.

Further Speakeasy training sessions will be taking place at Benfieldside Sure Start Children’s Centre. Parents and carers interested in enrolling should contact Family Support Worker Linda Frazer on (01207) 232048.
