DURHAM Markets Company is once again organising free history tours of the city’s Market Hall, giving insight into the varied uses over the centuries of the site on which it sits.

The monthly tours have proved popular with both locals and visitors to the city, highlighting how use of the city-centre site has changed, and the part it’s played in Durham’s evolution. The tours are led by local historian and archivist, David Butler.

The first free history tour of the Market Hall for 2020 will be on Thursday, March 12, at 10.30am, starting from the main Market Hall entrance off Durham Market Place. During the summer months, there will also be several City Walking History Tours.

David Butler said: “The Market Hall is a city centre site with a fascinating past, but its story is often unheard as it is neighbour to world-renowned historical sites."

"However, I’d recommend taking the time to learn how this part of the city has developed, as it certainly wasn’t always home to a market.”

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets Company, added: “In such a small city centre, one plot of land is bound to have seen its use change over the centuries, and where we are based has certainly had its highs and lows.

“These tours are designed for small numbers, making it easy to ask questions, and find out about the history that really interest you.”
