FAMILIES affected by young sudden cardiac death will be among walkers who take to the streets of Durham for a charity's flagship event.
The 10th annual CRY Durham Walk – which has raised around £75,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young since its launch– will be held on Saturday, October 5.
The event begins at 11am and will take an 8km circular route, starting and finishing at Durham Amateur Rowing Club and featuring magnificent views of the Wear Valley and Durham’s historic cathedral and castle.
People have until Monday, September 30 to sign up in advance for £12, or £15 on day. It is free to those aged 16 of younger and who are accompanied by an adult.
Local CRY supporter David Jewell has volunteered at the event for the past three years.
He was first made aware of CRY following the tragic and sudden death of his only son Damien, in 2001, aged just 28.
He said: “Fellow bereaved dad, Jeff Morland, set up this important event in 2010 and, like me, knows the devastation of losing a son to young sudden cardiac death in his twenties. Jeff and all the other local volunteers who have helped the Durham Walk grow from strength to strength are so inspiring and I’m honoured to do whatever I can to help.”
Volunteers and marshals are also needed. For details of the charity, which works to prevent sudden deaths of under 35-year-olds from previously undiagnosed heart conditions, or the walk visit c-r-y.org.uk
