BURGLARS attempted to blow up a cash machine at a village shop late last night (Thursday).
The incident happened at the Co-op, Coxhoe, near Durham, between 10.30pm and 11pm.
Detective Constable Darren Cresswell, of Durham City CID, said: “We understand that the suspects have used some kind of substance to try and blow up the cash machine.
"They were unsuccessful in their attempts. They then forced open roller shutters to break in to the store but left empty-handed.
“This attack has rendered the ATM out of use, as well as causing damage to the store’s doors.”
Police are appealing for witnesses and want to trace a dark coloured Volkswagon vehicle which is reported to have sped off near to the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to call Durham City CID on 101 quoting reference 493 of November 8 or to report it anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
