A TEENAGER arrested in connection with a fatal collision involving a car which had previously been followed by police is in hospital with serious injuries.
Officers had been following the vehicle after it was linked to two other cars which were found abandoned with damaged windscreens in the Walker area.
But they lost sight of it just before the collision, which has left the other pedestrian, a 58-year-old man, in hospital with injuries which are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.
Northumbria Police confirmed that a 19-year-old man, believed to be the vehicle’s driver, has been arrested and two other occupants of the vehicle also remain in hospital with serious injuries.
The incident has now been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has started its own investigation.
