SEASONAL activities got Christmas underway in north Durham over the weekend.
A host of family fun events were staged on Middle Street in Consett town centre, with the light switch on taking place on Saturday evening.
Earlier in the day there was a range of free live music, dance, theatre and comedy entertainment with market stalls selling Christmas crafts and gifts and Santa in his grotto at the Derwent Centre.
There was also face-painting, circus skills and other activities with visits from Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Peppa Pig and Frosty Magic characters.
Corrine Walton, coordinator of Derwent Valley Partnership, which organised the event, said: “I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who braved the cold to come along and support our Christmas in Consett event.
“It was great to see so many of you browse the stalls, enjoy the entertainment and visit Santa.
“Thanks to all of our performers, suppliers, partners, community groups and volunteers who made the event possible. It was a big team effort.”
On Wednesday, December 3, the partnership is staging another free event at Blackhill and Consett Park with the Friends of The Park and Leisureworks.
Christmas in the Park includes carol singing and Christmas lights switch on between 3pm and 6pm, children’s activities and rides as well as a free Christmas decoration workshop.
Music will be played by the Consett Salvation Army Band before the park Christmas lights are switched on by the cast of Aladdin, Consett’s family pantomime.
