VOLUNTEERS have given a park bandstand a makeover.
Students and others involved in King’s Church Durham’s June Project worked with Durham County Council officers to clean and paint the bandstand in Wharton Park, Durham City.
The Victorian park is being restored to its former glory under a £3m project which will include a new heritage centre, cafe and play area and improvements to an amphitheatre and miniature car track.
Pauline Walker, a senior civic pride officer at the council, said: “This is a hugely popular Victorian park which nestles in the heart of Durham City and provides captivating views of Durham Cathedral.
“Sprucing it up will make it even more attracting and support our bids in both competitions.”
June Project ran for a week, until Friday, June 15.
Becca Kay, from King’s Church, said: “Each year a team of around 120 people give their full-time energy to loving and serving the city, building on the work the church is already involved with throughout the year.”
Durham is currently going for gold in the Northumbria in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions.
