A POLITICIAN has visited a primary school to open its new library.
Pat Glass, MP for north-west Durham, was at Delves Lane Primary School, near Consett, earlier today. (Friday, June 20)
The school was opened to the public with an exhibition of photographs, reports and school books on display.
Ms Glass said: “I was delighted to open the new Delves Lane Primary School Library.
“The school has carefully selected its fixtures and fittings to bring an old school building back to life and I know their pupils will use it regularly to improve their reading skills.”
Delves Lane Infant School first opened in 1968 and has seen several generations of local people through its doors in the last 46 years.
The infant school merged with the junior school in 2008 but until March 31 they were still legally registered as two schools.
On April 1 the new community primary school was formally opened.
The opening of the library event was followed by a picnic and outside summer disco with music ranging through the decades.
Children and staff were dressed in outfits that have appeared since the opening of the infant school ranging through the 60s,70s, 80, 90s to present day.
Melanie Parker, pastoral manager, said: “Following an appeal for old photographs of the Infant School we have received lots of input and support from the community, which has enabled us to put together an exhibition of photographs, past and present.
“We invited members of the public, ex-pupils, school governors and our local MP Pat Glass to attend the event.”
