A UNIVERSITY student is sharing her passion for science with children at a County Durham primary school.

Kat Thorogood is encouraging youngsters at Trimdon Junior School in Trimdon Village to see themselves as the scientists of tomorrow, as part of Durham University’s Science into Schools programme.

The 20-year-old, who is studying earth sciences, has been working alongside the school’s science co-ordinator, Angela Davidson, to bring the topic to life and challenge the stereotype that all scientists are old and wear white coats.

So far, Miss Thorogood has focused on climate change and the children have been learning how to reduce their own fuel use in the future.

Trimdon Junior School is already an Eco School and is working towards achieving a green flag award, which is an international standard of excellence that recognises steps to tackle environmental issues.

Mrs Davidson said: “This is the third time we have welcomed a Durham University science student into the school and they have all been fantastic.

“We want to show children how interesting science can be and that there is nothing to stop them pursing it as a career when they grow up.

“We have a brilliant after school science club here too.”

Miss Thorogood said the experience had strengthened her resolved to become a teacher, adding: “I have always been interested in climate science and it has been great to share this with the children.”
