A £500,000 refurbishment of a flagship arts venue is scheduled to begin later this month (February).
Sunderland City Library and Arts Centre will get an improved local studies library and a new computer lounge and free wi-fi will be introduced throughout.
The children’s library will be renewed and the layout reorganised, bringing together six service desks into one.
Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for public health, wellness and culture, said the library was in desperate need of bringing up to date.
“We want to make it more welcoming for regular library users and also encourage people who don’t use the library at the moment to come in and see what it has to offer.”
The library will close after the half-term holidays on Monday, February 24, and reopen on Monday, March 31.
The Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art will remain open throughout.
