FIREFIGHTERS extinguished a huge blaze at a disused building after tackling the flames for about an hour and a half today (Wednesday May 22).
About 50 firefighters from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service attended the fire at Wincomblee Workshops, in White Street, Walker, Newcastle, at 1.40pm.
A fire brigade spokesman said eight fire appliances and two specialist appliances attended the incident.
The fire, which started on the third floor of the four-storey building, was tackled from the outside by the aerial ladder platform, two jets and a hose reel.
No one was inside the building at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
The cause of the fire is not yet known but is suspected of having been started maliciously.
An investigation will be carried out by the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police.
Anyone with information should contact the police on 101.
