AN EAST Durham coastal area which has been blighted by fly-tipping is undergoing a spring clean today (Friday, May 10).

Representatives from Durham County Council, Durham Police, Durham Heritage Coast and Natural England are being joined by a team of volunteers who are working together to clean up the Denemouth area at Blackhall.

Ian Hoult, neighbourhoods protection manager at Durham County Council, said: “We’re carrying out the clean up of the Denemouth area in response to complaints from local people about fly-tipping.

“Overall in County Durham we have seen a 20 per cent reduction in the number of incidents of fly-tipping in the last four years and we remain committed to tackling this issue.

“We would appeal to anyone with information which could help us to catch those responsible for fly-tipping to contact us so that we can take appropriate action.”

To report fly-tipping or provide information about those responsible contact Durham County Council on 03000 26 1000.
