MEMBERS of a centre for adults with learning difficulties today (Thursday, May 9) completed a sponsored walk to raise money for a sick girl.
People who attend the Ebony Day Care Centre, in Leadgate, near Consett, along with members of staff and helpers, walked a distance of three miles - from the Morrison Busty roundabout, at Annfield Plain, to nearby Oxhill and back.
The event, involving about 20 people and including some wheelchair users, was in aid of the Fraja Ellie Appeal.
The appeal aims to raise £500,000 to send the five-year-old, of Leeming, North Yorkshire, whose family are originally from Consett, to travel to the US for cancer treatment.
Care centre day services manager Julie Ringer said: “We have 15 service users and this is the fourth year we have had a sponsored walk for charity.
“This year we decided to raise money for the Fraja Ellie Appeal and hope to exceed the £1,000 we raised for Help for Heroes last year.
“Today was a great day. Thankfully it stayed dry. Lots of drivers tooted their horns in support.”
Among those taking part were Craig Houston, Daryl Ringer, Jack Murdoch and Perry Bland, who volunteered their help for the day. Signs for the event were provided by Annfield Plain’s Geordie Signs.
Previous sponsored walks have raised money for the Great North Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes Anyone who wishes to contribute toward the sponsored walk can contact the centre on 01207-437070.
