CHARITIES have benefited to the tune of £6,000 from a swimathon.

The money was raised through the annual charity swimathon of the Durham Rotary Club.

The event was held at Freeman’s Quay leisure centre, Durham City, last November. Thirty-seven teams including more than 160 people swam lengths in aid of a range of charities.

Among the causes to benefit were Down’s Syndrome North East, the Treetops Children’s Ward at the University Hospital of North Durham, the Great North Air Ambulance, Help For Heroes and Finchale Training College.

Rotary club president Arthur Bullough said: “We are delighted that the swimathon has proved such a success yet again. Congratulations and thank you to all those who took part or donated.

“The swimathon is a great way of raising money for charity and remains one of our most popular and successful events. We would welcome anyone who wishes to become involved in the event next year.”
