CITY police are urging visitors and shoppers to take extra care in the countdown to Christmas.
Police in Durham say Christmas is a fun time but can be stressful and no-one wants to become a victim of crime.
They are urging people to: avoid getting loaded down with too many bags, stay alert when in busy shops and streets, keep all bags closed and zipped up and avoid leaving property lying on tables.
Paul Anderson, the neighbourhood inspector for Durham City, said: “Durham is a very safe place and we are seeing reductions in thefts but we would like to keep it that way. Don’t give criminals the opportunity they need.
“In the few weeks before Christmas it is very busy in Durham. It’s a great place to visit. People can shop with confidence. But please take care.”
There will be extra patrols in all areas across the city, both high visibility and under cover, to provide reassurance and target criminals.
To report a crime, call Durham Constabulary on 101.
