ASPIRING artists helped an established figure in the field to create part of a forthcoming exhibition.

Toby Paterson’s creative look at the built environment of Peterlee, County Durham, will feature a giant indoor mural.

It will fill a wall within the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery, in Durham, as part of the exhibition: An Experiment in Total Environment.

More than a dozen budding artists were chosen to work with Mr Paterson, as part of the national Big Draw project.

They joined him in the gallery at the weekend to develop the huge wall painting.

Their finished piece will feature in the exhibition, which opens at the Aykley Heads museum, in December.

Exploring the buildings of the 50-year-old new town, it will include new creations by Mr Paterson alongside the work of Victor Pasmore, the designer responsible for the look of the buildings in the emerging town in the 1960s.

It forms part of a wider project reflecting on the town’s past and future and is in part staged with the help of the Apollo Pavilion Community Association, which highlights the work of Pasmore in Peterlee.

Durham County Council and Northern Architecture are also supporting the project.

The exhibition, which will run until March, will be backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England.
