WORK has begun on a £150,000 project to create a village play area.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on a playing field at Bearpark Primary School, in Bearpark, near Durham City, today (October 29).

The scheme, overseen by Groundwork North East, will see Bearpark get a new play area, wheeled sports facility, kickabout area and outdoor gym.

Oliver Graham, area programme manager for Groundwork North East, said: “The scheme will provide much needed leisure facilities for the whole community and with the creation of a wheeled sports facility the site will be a real attraction for young people not only of Bearpark but of all the surrounding villages.

“The play area will also be a great resource for the school, who will be able to use the facilities as and when they choose.”

The scheme is supported by Framwellgate Moor county councillors Mark Wilkes and Rev Crooks.
