WORK has started to create a haven for residents and wildlife.

The site, behind Camperdown Avenue, Chester-le-Street, is currently plain and uninteresting.

But a £45,000 project is underway to convert it into a green space for people of all ages.

North Lodge Residents Association is getting support from Groundwork North East and has funding from Biffa Award and local Durham County Council member Peter May’s neighbourhood budget.

The access track will be improved and a surfaced, accessible loop footpath will be created.

New fencing will be installed and street furniture, such as benches added to provide places where visitors can relax.

A variety of trees and flowering/ evergreen plants and shrubs will make the site more pleasant and attractive.

Residents want the site to benefit wildlife so the planting will include insect-friendly species.

There will be an area for ball games and a nformal play structures for younger children.

Jackie Martin, chairwoman of the residents association, said: "Thanks to the generosity of Biffa, county councillor Peter May and Groundwork North East, the local community have been successful in transforming an area for the enjoyment of all age groups.

“The planting of various trees and shrubs will also encourage wildlife. "
